My nails are sharp.
My arms are strong.
My eyes see even in this darkness.

My heart, it races.
My ears, they pulse.
My nose can smell the earth inside the earth.

Warm soil crumples in my hand.
I stare up,
up,
up at the speck of light above my head.

My eyes are now accustomed to darkness.
My ears are now accustomed to silence.
My nose is now accustomed to earth.
My heart is now accustomed to emptiness.

I stare at the dot.
The speck of light.
I hear a trill.
A coo.
The birds are there today.

They're far, but I can hear them.
The sounds are heavenly.
There are only two.
They are my only company in this hole.

I stare at the wall of soil.
Soft, rich soil.
My right hand digs in, then my left.
The soil crumples in my hand.
I hiss.

I leap a bit, and get good soil.
I latch on.
And I begin to climb.

I do not know what the world will be like outside my hole.
I do not know what the world will be like up there.
And while I am being honest,
I must admit:
I am scared.

I have to face this world alone, this brand new world of light.
Will I make it through the day?
Will I survive the night?

Will this hole become my home?
Or will I never turn back?
Will I be welcomed by the ones above?
Or never given slack?

I slide down the wall,
Just a foot or two.
My mind races.
Will I make it through?

I stare at the light.
It's bigger than before.
I begin to climb again.

I am not a mole.
I do not belong in the earth.
I do not belong in a hole.

It's not about how fast I get out,
Or about what's waiting with the fresh air,
I've got my hopes,
My wishes
And dreams,
And I'm almost there.
